Frequently Asked Questions
What is photovoice?
Photovoice is a community-based project aimed at giving marginalized groups a voice in society. Participants in photovoice groups use cameras to take pictures according to a certain theme and create captions to go with their pictures. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Using photography is a powerful way for teens to share their perspectives on important issues. Through the photovoice project, teens can slant the pictures they take with short captions that give their perspectives on important teen issues.
Is there a theme to the photovoice project?
The theme is resilience (the ability to bounce back after challenges). Let us know what helps you to be healthy and resilient...AND what your community could do to better support you in reaching your dreams.
Do I have to have a camera or know how to take pictures to join the group?
No, you don't need to know about photography or be a good photographer. We will will teach you. And, we will provide digital cameras to those who need them.
How will the photos teens take be used?
It is ultimately up to the teens to decide how they want their work to be shared with the community. In the past, teen groups have made presentations to local decision makers, to their schools and to prevention groups. We have also displayed the photos at conferences, health fairs, the state legislature and school events. The last two years teens have made an Instagram account of the photos.
Can I get service hours for participating in the project?
The project coordinator can write a letter to record your hours for any service organization you are part of and, it up to your service organization to decide if the hours count.
Do I have to be able to attend all the sessions?
You can miss one of the five sessions and still get the $50 gift card if you have completed the work. There will be important group-resilience building activities and photovoice techniques taught during sessions.
